Community Involvement

Kansas City has been home to DST since we opened for business here in 1969. Thousands of DST associates work here in a variety of office settings throughout the city. DST has a significant presence in the downtown’s west side, where the company’s name is often linked with development and redevelopment activity. As a major employer and property owner, DST has an interest in the overall health of the metropolitan area as an attractive and desirable place to live and work. Some of the company’s community involvements include:

  • Projects, often in partnership with others, that strengthen the downtown and surrounding areas. One of these, the multi-faceted IRS project, facilitated the relocation of thousands of employees into the Crown Center area, provided 1,500 additional public parking spaces at Union Station and connected the Station with the Freighthouse/Crossroads district via a pedestrian bridge. DST also has been involved in the restoration and expansion of one of the city’s prime convention-center hotels, the rejuvenation of the Quality Hill and Garment District neighborhoods and the creation of a neighborhood grant program.

  • Sponsorship of area art events, organizations and institutions that contribute to the quality of life in the metropolitan region. The company also is involved in programs that enhance public access to art, including the Avenue of the Arts in downtown Kansas City, the placement of public sculptures, in partnership with the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, in the downtown area and free outdoor concerts in summertime.

  • Participation in programs to alleviate hunger, especially through support for area food banks and community garden organizations. The company also has its own community garden where associates may volunteer their free time to raise crops that are donated to a hot lunch program in the downtown area that serves hundreds of lunches five days a week to the needy.
